Measuring Principle of the Paddle Wheel Flow Meter
A paddle wheel flow meter is a type of flow meter that uses the principle of the mechanical displacement of a paddle wheel to measure the flow rate of a liquid.
The paddle wheel flow meter consists of a paddle wheel with multiple blades or vanes that are placed inside a pipe. As the liquid flows through the pipe, it causes the paddle wheel to rotate. The rotation of the paddle wheel is directly proportional to the flow rate of the liquid and can be used to measure the flow rate.
The measuring principle of the paddle wheel flow meter can be broken down into the following steps:
- Flow through the pipe: The liquid or gas flows through the pipe or duct, causing the paddle wheel to rotate.
- Rotation of the paddle wheel: As the liquid or gas flows through the pipe or duct, it causes the paddle wheel to rotate. The rotation of the paddle wheel is directly proportional to the flow rate of the liquid or gas.
- Measurement of the rotation: The rotation of the paddle wheel is measured by an encoder or other type of sensor. The sensor sends an electrical signal to a flow meter display or controller that is proportional to the rotation of the paddle wheel.
- Calculation of the flow rate: The flow rate of the liquid or gas is calculated by using the rotation of the paddle wheel and a calibration factor. The calibration factor is determined by measuring the flow rate of a known quantity of liquid or gas through the pipe or duct and comparing it to the rotation of the paddle wheel.
- Display of the flow rate: The flow rate of the liquid or gas is displayed on the flow meter display or controller.
Paddle wheel flow meters are suitable for measuring the flow of clean liquids, slurries, and gases with low viscosity and low density. They can be used in a wide range of industrial applications, such as water treatment, chemical processing, and food and beverage production. However, they are not suitable for measuring the flow of highly viscous liquids or liquids with high solids content.
